James Madison's Montpelier House Museum Archaeology Internships (Virginia)

Montpelier was the stately neoclassical home and gardens of James Madison. Located in Orange, Virginia, the home was restored not too long ago and has an active archaeology program, running on-site excavations and an object assessment lab where visitors can learn about the process of excavating and identifying artifacts. The house museum offers archaeology internships as well as field schools for non-students.

Historic Ship Sailing Program and Volunteer Opportunities at the Erie Maritime Museum (PA)

U.S. Brig Niagara Sail Training Program at the Erie Maritime Museum (PA): the tall ship sails Lake Erie and even ventures into Great Lakes on its award-winning sail training programs. Most last two weeks and are for either high school (age 14-18) or college students and give participants the experience of living and working on a historic American tall ship. The college program is typically the second two weeks of May though there is an environment-focused college program in August as well. The experience is physically strenuous but (apparently) also very rewarding and gives a unique insight into the past! A background check and medical records and insurance verification are all required for application/enrollment, just fyi. More info here.

• The Howell Living History Farm, an 130-acre farm interpreted as a working farm in the early 1900s, offers an internship program in self-sufficient farming. Interns work for 12 weeks in the summer, spring, or fall and gain experience working with livestock, crop processing, gardening, and even wood and metalworking, as well as other tasks depending on the season. The Baltimore Museum of Industry offers volunteer internships for students with at least one year of undergraduate experience. The museum is located in Baltimore, MD and features a variety of historic machines and exhibits on American industrialization, factories, and inventions throughout US history. Internships are flexible and deadlines appear to be rolling.

Internship Information:

• Applicants must be 18 or older with at least a year of college 
• A criminal background investigation may be done on prospective interns
• Interviews and training will be conducted
• Mon - Thurs 10am - 4pm hours available

Port Discovery on the downtown Baltimore harbor is an interactive museum for children. It doesn't have formal internship listings but can arrange internships with interested students from a variety of fields. Internships are on a volunteer basis and are limited.

Smithsonian Internship Programs for People with Disabilities

Here are two very exciting opportunities the Smithsonian has developed in recent years to aid those with disabilities in their professional development. I would like to personally commend the SI for implementing these excellent programs as disability advocacy is a much-overlooked field that is very close to my heart! 

• Accessibility Program for those with disabilities who are US citizens or permanent residents, high school students, college or grad students in a major related to program, or professionals who can benefit from the program (this is a stipend applied to whichever Smithsonian internship you obtain)
• $4,000 stipend for college and grad students for completion of 640 hours
• $1,500 for high school students
• Rolling admission

• Project SEARCH: an unpaid internship program for young adults with developmental disabilities to gain valuable work skills to aid future employment

Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum Internships and Fellowships

The Anacostia Community Museum is a newer Smithsonian institution located in southeast Washington, DC. This cutting-edge museum seeks to interpret urban experiences and the culture of minorities. It offers a very mentor-focused internship experiences for students aged eighteen or older and enrolled at or recently graduated from an academic institution.

Internship program:

• Academic credit available
• Interest in areas of focus presented at the museum 
• 18 years or older and enrolled or recently graduated from an academic institution
• At least 6 weeks; typically 3 months to 1 year
• 20 hours/week
• Internships available in: Office of Advancement, Collections, Education, Research, Design, Public Relations, and Special Events
• Unpaid without stipends (at least for now although the Smithsonian offers some scholarship programs, particularly for minorities)
• Selection made on a case-by-case basis based on student preparation and the institution's faculty availability and needs
• Most likely a rolling deadline

• Welcomed but arranged through the Smithsonian Office of Internships and Fellowships
